Understanding Granulomas and Types

Granuloma is a disorder in body tissue that appears due to inflammation. In microscopic examination, this abnormality can be seen as a collection of inflammation cells in the tissue in microscopic examination. The appearance of granulomas can be caused by several things, such as infection or due to exposure to chemicals. Granulomas are formed when the immune system captures substances or objects that are considered foreign by the body, whether chemical, biological, or physical. Granuloma can be in the body for years. This type of granuloma is called granuloma which has calcified or calcined, because it contains calcium deposits. An example is granuloma in lung tissue as a result of TB disease that was infected many years ago but is now inactive.

Types of Granulomas

The most common cases of granulomas are caused by infections in the lungs, both by bacteria and fungi, such as the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis that causes TB and histoplasmosis fungal infections. However, granulomas can also appear in tissues in other parts of the body, including:
  • Liver granuloma

  • Granulomas that appear in the liver can be caused by diseases that attack other organ systems in your body. The doctor will find out what systemic disease you have that causes the development of hepatic granuloma. Evaluation of clinical symptoms, appearance and location of granulomas can help doctors determine the diagnosis.
  • Granulomatous dermatitis

  • This condition is a rare skin disorder and its appearance has a certain pattern of spread on the surface of the skin. The appearance of granulomatous dermatitis is also related to other conditions, such as autoimmune diseases and the development of malignant cells in the body or cancer.
  • Granulomatous Lymphadenitis (GLA)

  • Glanuloma in lymph nodes is divided into infectious and non-communicable GLA. Sarcoidosis is a type of GLA that is not contagious but the cause is still unknown. Infectious GLA can be caused by bacterial infections such as tularemia, PES, and cat scratch disease or cat scratch disease.
  • Granulomatous Interstitial Nephritis (GIN)

  • Besides being caused by infection, GIN can also arise due to consumption of drugs and immune system reactions. GIN is a rare granuloma case. Most of these conditions are caused by tuberculosis or TB.
  • Chronic Granulomatous Disease

  • This disease is a hereditary disease associated with certain cells in the immune system. Disorders of these cells cause the immune system to not function properly and can cause recurrent infections. CGD sufferers become vulnerable to various types of fungal and bacterial infections, such as pneumonia. This disease can also cause skin infections such as boils, abscesses, and eczema that are difficult to cure.

Clinical Evaluation of Granulomas

Granuloma is a condition that is often detected accidentally when you are doing a health check or check up. The clinical features of granulomas tend to be nonspecific and can look like benign disease or vice versa, are malignant (cancer). This is why doctors need a thorough examination before you can make sure you have granulomas. Granulomas also generally do not show typical symptoms. Clinical evaluations, such as medical history, genetic factors, laboratory tests and radiological examinations such as CT scans and X-rays need to be carried out to confirm the diagnosis of granulomas and find the cause. The treatment will then be adjusted to the underlying cause. To determine whether granuloma is dangerous or not, you can consult a doctor to get further tests and treatment if needed.
